Bob Rett V50 grew up on Maple Street and lived only a block away from St. Vincent grade school and high school. He was one of five children and said an anonymous donor provided he and his siblings the opportunity to attend St. Vincent High School. "That was a big reason," Bob says, as to why he and his siblings could receive a Catholic education. It inspired Bob and his wife Donetta "Donnie" to create an estate gift for St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.
Bob said he was not always the best student but the faculty and staff encouraged him to learn and taught him discipline, which was a big part of his Catholic education. Bob added, "different teachers taught me the importance of finishing what you start and to never give up!" Bob always felt the importance of this lesson and continually followed this belief throughout his life.
Bob shared that math was a struggle to him, but Sr. Bernard, one of the faculty members, would always support Bob with his math struggles. "She seemed to have a good approach to helping me with learning complex math solutions," says Bob. He adds, "She always had the best interests of her students in mind."
Bob thoroughly enjoyed his high school years as a manager on the football team, hanging out with his friends at the Chat-n-Chew Diner, or working on his black 1935 Ford three-window Coupe with a V8 engine. "I removed the muffler and replaced it with street pipes so the car would really roar," laughed Bob. He added, "my father started yelling at me and gave me the money to replace with a regular muffler."
Bob and Donnie Rett are very committed to the students at STVM. They included the school as part of their estate plans to support those students that have academic challenges. Bob says, "they just need the opportunity that I was given so many years ago." Bob and Donnie continue to support St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. Bob is pleased with STVM and added, "keep doing what you have been doing because it is working." Bob never forgot his upbringing on Maple Street and for that St. Vincent-St. Mary High School is truly blessed by the Rett family's financial support.
